Name(s):Jacob Levin
Nickname(s): Redfoot / The Frozen Shield Lamia Scales / Winters Knight
Age: 23
Sex: Male
Birthday: 12 October X757
Sexuality: Straight
Class: Scavenger
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Rank: D
Guild: Lamia Scale
Guild Tattoo: Tattoo located on the back of his right shoulder
Face Claim: Gene Starwind - Outlaw Star

II. APPEARANCE

Height: 6’
Weight: 190lbs
Hair: Red
Eyes: Blue
General Appearance: Levin has led a hard life. A fact made evident by the countless scars that crisscross his body. His body is well muscled though his athletic form is generally hidden beneath his simple t-shirts and trademark leather or canvass jackets. He is rarely seen in anything besides a pair of dark jeans and well worn work boots. His red hair is usually disheveled and bordering on the long side. While he tends to have an easy smile when in public, that form of levity is lost once he gets some space to himself.

Extra: He bears a brand on the top of his left hand that marks him as a thief and a pirate. Any authorities that see this brand will likely attempt to arrest him on site as he is technically an escaped felon. His body carries several tattoos from his time as a pirate.

III. PERSONALITY

Personality: Michael Levin is a young man with an excessive sense of personal responsibility. He isn’t exactly trusting, but those who become his friends will have an ally for life. He isn’t the most cheerful person on the planet, but you wouldn’t know it to look at him. The mage was raised by parents who above all else, believed appearances had to be maintained at all costs. They came to that conclusion for the sake of their public image, so that they could remain the pillars of the community. Their son cares little for his own image, but he believes each burden is a personal one, placed on his shoulders as a challenge or means of penance. As such, sharing that burden with another person would seemingly take away from his own accomplishments and make him a weaker individual. That doesn’t mean he won’t accept help for every situation, but he isn’t going to whine about his problems to even his trusted friends. Despite this, he is more than happy to lend a hand if anyone else is in need of assistance, whether or not they want it.

He is known around his community as a good Samaritan and someone to be trusted. Even if he does drink too much. His adopted daughter is the only thing in the world that truly matters to him. Despite his checkered past he has been trying for the last few years to create a normal home for her, and live the life of a man she could respect. He doesn’t want to leave behind a legacy of crime and hedonistic activity but changing his personality isn’t easy. He still falls back into his old ways on a regular basis, something he regrets severely, and something he often attempts to deny. The only thing he hates more than people judging him because of his brand, is when people point out how little he has really changed.

Likes:

  • Drinking
  • Lamia Scale
  • The ocean and the cold
  • All pretty women
  • Mountains
  • A good fight
  • Money

Dislikes:

  • The abuse of power
  • The law
  • Falling to his baser instincts
  • Being given charity
  • Upsetting Lillian

Motivations: Being someone Lillian can look up to. He has done a great deal of terrible things in his short life. While he doesn't necessarily regret them, he does feel obligated to provide a normal, stable life for his adopted daughter. This drives him to constantly strive to be the best, both in ability and character. Even at the risk of his own safety. Her opinion of him is the greatest motivator for him to continue legal work, to get up after being knocked up, and to not fall back into his less noble lifestyle.

Fears:

  • Having Lily find out about his past. Specifically what he did to land himself in prison.
  • Not being able to protect the people he cares about.
  • His pride leading him into situations he can’t truly handle.

Positive Traits: +15

  • Diehard (+2): You can remain conscious after attacks that would fell others.
  • Fortitude (+3): You are tougher than normal. You can take more hits than the regular Joe.
  • Zealot (+4) [Sword]: You are particularly flexible and poised.
  • Regeneration (+4): You heal very fast inside and outside of combat. Small cuts that go up to one inch deep are healed in the next post.
  • Persuasive (+2): You have a way with words and body language. Somehow you manage to persuade weaker minded people easily.

Negative Traits: -15

  • Bad Reputation (-1): You have a reputation that angers or frightens people. Examples include being unlucky, petty, or cruel. The rep may or may not be accurate, but in either case, word travels faster than you do.
  • Branded (-2): You have fled for a crime committed and now have a prominent brand. You may have been a criminal, a slave, or some other such illicit individual. The brand is such that it cannot be easily covered, and a cursory search reveals it each time. Law enforcement agents of any lawful land will immediately take you into custody if they see the mark, for extradition or imprisonment. It is your choice as to whether or not you were falsely accused of the crime. [Jacob was branded on his hand with a large T after being arrested for Theft and Piracy. Considering he broke out of custody to gain his freedom he is still a wanted man, particularly in Hargeon where he is most well known.]
  • Curiosity (-1): You're a naturally curious person and you find mysteries of any sort irresistible. In most circumstances, alas, your curiosity overrides your common sense.
This forces you to investigate something unusual, even if it looks like it might be dangerous.
  • Daredevil (-2): You only really feel alive when you're staring death in the face. Your character is addicted to the thrill of death-defying stunts, pushing himsefl to the limit at every available opportunity.
  • Dark Secret (-1): You have some sort of secret that, if revealed, would make you an outcast amongst your society and companions. While this secret is on your mind at all times, it will come up in topics only once in a while, but when it does, watch out![Lillian doesn't know that he used to do for a living. Or that her mother was one of the most vicious pirates that ever sailed.]
  • Dependent (-3): You have a ward or charge that depends on you, usually a young child or elderly relative that needs you to provide for them and devote at least part of your time to them. In money terms, this will cost you five percent of your jewels a month. You may also be required to stay near home often in case you are needed.
  • Fanaticism (-1): This can be a substantial disadvantage for a character, though it requires significant roleplaying commitment on the part of the player. The fanaticism can be dedication to a particular cult, religion, or god, or it can be more worldly-based, in the sense of overwhelming loyalty to a state, a military presence, or to a particular leader. Whatever their sources, the different types of fanaticism have several things in common. If a certain code of behavior is called for by the belief, then the character must conform to that behavior--even if it conflicts with the immediate goals of the PC and his companions. While fanaticism is not necessarily evil, it may certainly become tiresome to those who do not share the fanatics beliefs.
  • Intolerance (-1): You have an irrational dislike of a certain thing. It may be an animal, a class of person, a situation, or just about anything at all. Note that some dislikes may be too trivial or ridiculous to count--a dislike of Bavarian-crème-filled donuts or mechanical pencils, for example, has no real dramatic value and will not be allowed.
  • Proud (-1): You don't like accepting help from others. If a gift or offer of aid smacks of charity or pity even the slightest bit, you grow indignant and refuse it.
  • Reckless (-1): You lack the emotion of fear. Unfortunately, it is often an important cue that keeps men from doing foolhardy things. Sure, you don't flinch at the sight of even the most hideous monster, but neither do you feel the need to run away when outclassed.
  • Righteous (-1): The end justifies the means. You are willing to perform morally repugnant actions in order to achieve noble goals. Unfortunately, this can alienate those people who might support your cause if you didn't use such heavy-handed methods.

IV. MAGIC
Magic: Ice Magic
Caster or Holder: Caster
Description: Ice magic has two common applications. The first is simply dropping the temperature in an area. This process can be gradual or abrupt depending on the skill of the mage but usually results in creating an area where the temperature drops to single digits. Water is especially susceptible to this form of ice magic as it can begin to solidify almost instantly. The second form is the most visually obvious as the caster summons water molecules from the air or from their own body to create ice. It can be done with either hand and results in physical objects being generated for use by the mage.  For any attacks which travel through the air two hands are required in order to provide the spell with enough focus and direction to move towards a target.

Strengths: Ice magic can be incredibly versatile, from making an inanimate or metal object frozen enough to shatter, to creating furniture or weapons and armor. It is easier to use and more powerful in colder weather or when surrounded by large amounts of water. The ice can be created with razor edges, or with densities heavier than normal ice depending on the skill of the mage.

Weaknesses: Ice magic doesn’t fare well against fire unless it is being used by a truly gifted mage. As such fire mages can prove to be a severe challenge, especially to novice mages. Furthermore, since Ice Magic can draw moisture from the caster there is a very real danger of being weakened by prolonged battles without proper hydration. Ice magic tends to be harder to cast in hotter climates and as such can make spells at the limits of a mages skill fail or form incompletely.

V. HISTORY

History:

Jacob Levin was born to a small family of mages in the port city of Hargeon. It was an admittedly easy childhood thanks to the small percentage of magic users in the city. His parents used their abilities to carve out a niche by providing enchanted goods. Simple one use spells that entertained or made life somewhat more convenient even if they didn’t really create any positive change in the world. In the beginning that was enough for Jacob. Sure, many of the children of the city would harass him, they would dare him to use his magic to prevent them from beating him up on his way to and from school. He never did, he restrained himself for three simple reasons. The first was that his parents had expressly forbid it. They claimed that magic had a bad enough reputation as it was, and the family’s place in Hargeon society had to be maintained by creating the reputation of pacifism and coexistence. The second reason was because using magic for other peoples entertainment was beneath him. Even if his spells were strong enough to enforce some kind of advantage, the simple fact that he had given in would guarantee his failure to win the greater struggle. The third reason was the most important.

After several years of being bullied, and after growing into his own body he didn’t need to use magic to fight them off. He learned how to fight by simple trial and error. By being vicious and callous and unrelenting. He didn’t win every fight, but by the time he was in his early teens there was no one else in his age bracket that dared confront him without a severe numerical advantage. Even then, things tended to not be entirely one sided.

It was during one such encounter where Levin was forced into a running fist fight against eight other boys that he caught the attention of a woman that would change his life forever. A woman that would change it for the worst. At just fifteen Jacob had never seen a woman so beautiful, so commanding and inspiring. She was the captain of a pirate vessel, though he didn’t know it at the time, and when he had finally fallen to the four remaining boys that were attacking him, it was she that stepped in and saved him from another beating. Her name was Isabelle Desrosiers, and she had him enthralled the moment he saw her.

From that point on he spent much of his free time at the pubs that she and others of her trade frequented, He became a familiar and well liked face not only because of his jokes and willingness to please, but because he would run errands for the seedier individuals. Whether that was being a lookout, running letters, or tracking down people and things of interest he didn’t care.
By this time word had begun to spread about his less than respectable activities, and like all good parents due his tried to intervene. It was a noble attempt that only made things worse, and after a truly heated argument Jacob Levin left his home at the tender year of seventeen.

Naturally his first stop was to the pub that he had become a regular at. He announced to the crowd that he intended to join a vessel, and when one boisterous man pointed out that he had no experience on the sea, another voice immediately countered. From the corner of the room Isabelle, recently returned from a series of raids that had already granted her the fame any pirate would envy, spoke in his defense. And immediately offered him a position aboard her vessel.

It was the highlight of his early years and one that precipitated a disastrous downward spiral.

He started working on the rigging, climbing ropes and trimming sails in accordance to whatever commands were bellowed from the deck. It was a happy time, right up until they encountered their first target.

The ship was poorly defended and loaded with goods that made it sit heavy in the water. Levin was included amongst the first wave of boarders and saw all of what little action there was. It was the first time he had seen friends wounded in conflict, it was the first time he had seen an enemy die. Though he wouldn’t take a life for several more months Isabelle was sure to reassure him as to the justification of their actions.

By the time he was twenty he was as ruthless and unapologetic as the rest of the crew. Though only time he spent on land was to look after Isabelle’s newborn daughter. He was trusted enough to look after the child apparently, but not trusted enough to ever be told who the father was. Levin’s body carried several tattoos, his face was lean and his body muscled from years of hard work and conflict. He believed he was invincible so long as he sailed under Desrosiers banner. He was gravely mistaken.

Despite having a reputation of his own after several daring adventures and a he respect of being only one of two mages onboard, Levin was still little more than a trusted lieutenant. Something that proved his undoing when the De Schim, Isabelle’s ship, was finally taken down.

The battle was epic, though entirely one sided. Levin, brawled his way through enemy sailors receiving several dozen lacerations before the powder room finally exploded, splitting the ship in two and sending all those aboard flailing into the sea.

When he was pulled from the water it wasn’t by his fellow pirates, but by sailors of the Fiore Navy.

His trail was a farce, as the majority of the De Schim’s officers, including Isabelle were never found. It was especially futile after be the lower ranking
pirates who earned pardons sold him out as one of the inner circle.

He was clapped in irons, sent to prison, branded on his hand so that everyone would know his crime, and then pressed into forced labor.

He worked the mines for nearly a year before finally escaping during a riot and making his way back to Hergeon. So ashamed of his activities he hid his face and tried to make contact with any of his crew who might still have been alive. He heard that while a handful of the officers had survived Isabelle had never returned home, leaving her three year old daughter destitute.

For some reason, the pirate felt obligated to see the young girl, but couldn’t find her at the home she was usually left at. After a brief interrogation of the elderly couple that had lived there he finally learned that the young girl had been sold to a group of men. Though the couple swore that the men had promised to take her to a better place the large sack of jewels indicated otherwise. So Levin took the sack of money, purchased some equipment and followed in the direction the men were said to have taken. He met up with them just outside Magnolia town. The fight didn’t last long, especially since Levin attacked while half of them were still asleep, but after the carnage the pirate recognized the faces of two of the men who had testified against him. While most of the men he had fought were broken but breathing, he hung these two from the tallest tree he could find.

He released the seven children that had been captured and pointed them in the direction of Magnolia. For one reason or another, he couldn’t stand to think of Isabelle’s daughter living as a pauper on the streets of some unknown city. So despite the difficulties of taking care of a child while running from the law, Levin adopted her as his own.

By the time he reached Lamia Scale he had virtually no money, no meaningful work, and no hope for providing for the young girl he had sworn to protect. Fortunately he managed to gain acceptance into Lamia Scale, his brand mostly hidden behind a pair of fingerless gloves. Despite being relatively new he has managed to make a small niche for himself and Lily. He works more than the young girl would like, but it is necessary if he want to keep their small apartment.
